Last week I shared RapidMiner’s philosophy with you – “We want to empower anybody to do super-innovative analytics” – and also told you that we are changing from a Business Source business model because we feel it’s not in close harmony with our philosophy.
An Open Core business model looks like a natural choice for RapidMiner, don’t you think? Well… yes, absolutely – we are embracing an open core business model to strive a good balance between the underlying concepts of open source and letting our organization grow – which ultimately of course also benefits the users of our software.
BUT we want to go the extra mile for our user community.
So we’ve thought hard about how we can improve the open core model to give an even stronger offering to the RapidMiner community to show them the important role that they play in fostering predictive analytics innovation.
And this is what we came up with: Get-More-Open-Core. (Just imagine that there is a trademark sign TM at the end of this – it is THAT good!)
The idea is of Get-More-Open-Core is very simple. We use a “traditional” open core model. This means that the basic version of RapidMiner Studio is free and available under an OSI-certified open source license – which is the AGPL v3 in our case. We call this the “Basic” edition.
And then, of course, there is a commercial offer, as well, with features that support enterprises with the creation and management of predictive analytics models and processes. You remember: We want to feed our families, too. This is the “Professional” edition.
But for our registered community members, we came up with an additional FREE package which offers community-based features that go beyond the basics. These are our Wisdom of Crowds recommendations, our Marketplace of product extensions, and our cloud infrastructure. We call this our “Community” edition.
The Community edition is the cornerstone of the Get-More-Open-Core business model, embracing both the free aspect of open source software, plus fostering the mutual learning, innovation and richness that results from the synergies of a thriving community. The picture below shows the different packages and how they will relate to each other.
I am very thrilled by our new Get-More-Open-Core model and I am sure that our community members will love this new model too. Our users get more than ever before and can benefit from the fast pace of innovation. As I said before, our philosophy is:
“Empowering anybody to do super-innovative analytics.”
The Get-More-Open-Core model is supporting exactly this. And even better: Our community members can now support each other to do more super-innovative things than before!
